Hawks face must-win Showdown

Dylan Busby dylan@silsbee-bee.com The Silsbee Bee Hardin-Jefferson faces a pivotal test Friday night as the Hawks travel to Hamshire-Fannett for a showdown with Blake Broussard and the Longhorns in a game that could have major implications for the District 10-4A Division II playoff race. Both programs enter the matchup looking to rebound from disappointing district-opening losses in what has become one of the most competitive districts in Texas high school football. Hardin-Jefferson suffered a heartbreaking 34-28 home loss to Shepherd despite several explosive plays from senior standout D’Corrian Warren, who found the end zone multiple times and helped keep the Hawks within striking distance. The loss snapped Hardin-Jefferson’s three-game winning streak and left the Hawks searching for answers entering a critical road contest. Hamshire-Fannett finds itself in a similar position after suffering its first loss of the season, falling 42-28 to West Orange-Stark on Friday. The Longhorns built a commanding 28-7 lead before the Mustangs rallied with 35 unanswered points. Broussard remains one of the district’s most dangerous quarterbacks, capable of stretching defenses vertically and creating explosive opportunities through the passing game. Against West Orange-Stark, he threw for 195 yards and a touchdown, with receiver Dwayne Long accounting for 153 receiving yards. For Hardin-Jefferson, containing Broussard while finding ways to get Warren involved offensively will be critical. The stakes could hardly be higher. With Silsbee, West Orange-Stark and Shepherd all competing for postseason positioning, neither the Hawks nor the Longhorns can afford to fall two games behind in district play this early in the season. A victory would put Hardin-Jefferson back in the playoff conversation and provide a major confidence boost heading into the remainder of its district schedule. A second consecutive loss, however, would leave the Hawks facing an increasingly difficult road to the postseason. Friday night represents more than another district game. It is an opportunity for Hardin-Jefferson to prove it belongs among the district’s contenders.
