Lions Roar Past Warren; look towards Hardin

Dylan Busby dylan@silsbee-bee.com The Silsbee Bee KOUNTZE — Homecoming night belonged to the Kountze Lions as they opened district play with a 20-6 victory over bitter rival Warren on Friday, giving the home crowd plenty to celebrate while taking an important first step toward securing a playoff berth. The Lions entered the contest looking to establish momentum after a difficult nondistrict schedule, and behind a strong performance from quarterback Maddox Martinka, Kountze delivered when it mattered most. Martinka completed 7 of 15 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns while adding 42 rushing yards on 14 carries. However, his contributions extended well beyond the offense. Martinka also recorded 13 tackles on defense, demonstrating the kind of toughness and leadership the Lions will need throughout their demanding district schedule. Running back Caiden Johnson provided balance to the offense, carrying the ball 18 times for 74 yards and a touchdown. Through the air, Johnathan Cole emerged as Martinka’s favorite target, hauling in three receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. Braydon Conner also delivered a big performance, catching two passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. Kountze’s defense proved equally important, holding the Warriors to just six points and preventing Warren from establishing any consistent offensive rhythm. The victory was particularly satisfying for the Lions, who defeated Warren 60-6 last season. This year’s Warriors entered the rivalry having already enjoyed more success than in their previous two seasons combined. However, Kountze made certain there would be no homecoming upset. The Lions now face a considerably tougher challenge as they travel to Hardin, where the Hornets are celebrating a historic victory over perennial powerhouse Newton. Hardin enters the matchup with considerable momentum, but Kountze has an opportunity to catch the Hornets coming off an emotional high. A victory would give the Lions two district wins and put them squarely in the playoff conversation. Following Hardin, Kountze remains on the road against a Woodville program that has shown signs of decline before returning home to face Newton. The Lions conclude district play with a road trip to New Waverly. While the remaining schedule presents plenty of challenges, Friday’s victory over Warren demonstrated that Kountze has the offensive weapons and defensive determination to compete. If the Lions can steal a victory against Hardin and capitalize on opportunities down the stretch, a postseason berth could be well within reach.
