Dylan Busby dylan@silsbee-bee.com The Silsbee Bee SILSBEE — Homecoming night turned into an absolute nightmare for the Jasper Bulldogs as Silsbee delivered a dominating 59-14 victory Friday night, overwhelming its longtime rival with explosive offensive plays, relentless defensive pressure and a nearly flawless performance from sophomore quarterback Sedrick Matthews Jr. The Tigers wasted little time establishing control, racing to a 29-0 first-quarter lead and carrying a commanding 52-7 advantage into halftime. Matthews was nearly perfect through the air, completing 8 of 9 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. His biggest target was senior RJ Williams, who caught four passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns. The duo opened the scoring with a 69-yard touchdown connection that immediately energized the homecoming crowd. Moments later, senior Braylen Johnson intercepted a Jasper pass and returned it for a touchdown, doubling the Tigers’ advantage before the Bulldogs could find their footing. Junior Haegyn Morris added two rushing touchdowns, while junior Corde’ Wilson terrorized Jasper on both sides of the football. Wilson carried the ball three times for 88 yards and two touchdowns, averaging an astonishing 29.3 yards per attempt. He was equally destructive defensively, recording four tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. His performance earned him Overall Player of the Week honors from the Silsbee coaching staff. Senior Anthony McKinney anchored the rushing attack with 107 yards on 10 carries, averaging 10.7 yards per attempt. Junior Wyatt Williamson contributed two receptions for 57 yards, stretching the Jasper defense and creating opportunities for Silsbee’s offensive attack. His efforts earned him Offensive Player of the Week recognition. Jestyn Jackson also contributed a touchdown reception from Matthews. However, Silsbee’s defensive performance was arguably even more impressive than its offensive explosion. The Tigers held Jasper to just 228 yards of total offense, including 60 passing yards, while consistently disrupting the Bulldogs’ backfield. Senior Carter Horton, named Defensive Player of the Week, anchored the defensive effort with seven tackles and three tackles for loss. Sophomore Cashton Ervin added four tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack, while Hunter Hollyfield contributed seven tackles. The Tigers intercepted two passes, with Johnson and Layton Meguess each recording a takeaway. Special teams also played a significant role in the rout. Jakob Love, selected as Special Teams Player of the Week, recorded nine kickoffs totaling 454 yards and averaged 40.5 yards on two punts. Silsbee also blocked a Jasper punt, helping produce one of two safeties against the Bulldogs. Jasper struggled throughout the first half, repeatedly finding itself behind the chains and unable to overcome Silsbee’s defensive pressure. Sophomore Dquincy Clark led the Bulldogs with 102 rushing yards on 19 carries. Quarterback Trevor Beatty completed four passes for 60 yards, including a touchdown connection with freshman Michael Bryant. Despite Jasper’s efforts, the Tigers controlled nearly every aspect of the contest. However, Silsbee will have little time to celebrate. The Tigers now travel to West Orange-Stark on Friday for a critical District 10-4A Division II showdown against the Mustangs. West Orange-Stark enters the contest fresh off a dramatic 42-28 comeback victory over Hamshire-Fannett, overcoming a 28-7 deficit with 35 unanswered points. For Silsbee, maintaining defensive discipline and continuing to create explosive offensive plays will be essential against a program known for its physicality and championship tradition. The matchup carries enormous implications for the district championship race, particularly with both programs looking to establish themselves among the district’s elite. Friday’s demolition of Jasper demonstrated just how dangerous the Tigers can be when their offense, defense and special teams operate together. Now Silsbee faces an opportunity to make an even louder statement. The Tigers have conquered their homecoming rival. Next comes one of Southeast Texas football’s most formidable opponents.
